Etiology, clinical characteristics and coinfection status of bronchiolitis in Suzhou

Abstract Background Bronchiolitis is a clinical syndrome commonly encountered in practice, particularly among infants and young children. To investigate the prevalence of pathogens hospitalized children with bronchiolitis study characteristics or without coinfections. Methods We investigated respiratory specimens data 1012 who were treated at Children’s Hospital Soochow University between November 2011 December 2018. The nasopharyngeal aspirates examined to detect viruses by direct immunofluorescence assay polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) was tested PCR enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results Of 1134 less than 2 years bronchiolitis, 122 excluded exclusion criteria. Causative pathogen detected 83.2% (842 1012). majority these (614 [72.9%] 842) single virus infection. most common syncytial (RSV) (44.4%), MP (15.6%), human rhinovirus (HRV) (14.4%). Coinfection identified 13.5% (137 1012) patients. included mixed infection Children had higher rate oxygen therapy compared Conclusions RSV, followed HRV. leads longer period illness, increased severity symptoms risk hypoxemia.
